Wales Rally GB - the final round of the FIA World Rally Championship - takes place from Thursday 29 November through to Sunday 2 December and is set to be bigger and better than ever!
This year, Wales Rally GB is celebrating its 75th birthday. Those joining the celebrations can look forward to a new service park, a parade of past winners’ cars and a dedicated autograph-signing session, where spectators can meet their heroes of yesteryear.
‘The Millennium Job’
In keeping with the tradition of previous years, the rally will return for its now legendary annual visit to the Millennium Stadium on the Saturday night. This proves to be one of the biggest draws in the city’s sporting calendar and it’s not without good reason. Here, fans will strap themselves in for a high-octane action show of precision driving, spectacular stunts and high speed chases before rallying stars from across the globe enter the stadium to compete.
Billed by Wales Rally GB organisers as ‘The Millennium Job,’ visitors will enjoy a mouth-watering demonstration of bravery and skill on four wheels, performed by five-times British Auto Test champion, Paul Swift and his team. Spectators will also be taken on a high-speed ride through the event’s history from the very first running in Torquay in 1932 to Cardiff in 2007.
SA1 Swansea Waterfront
One of the most exciting developments for Wales Rally GB in 2007 will be the move of the service park to the sensational new SA1 Swansea Waterfront development. Its new location in the centre of Swansea will allow everyone to get up close to the action, filling the streets of Swansea with the buzz and atmosphere of the WRC ‘circus’.
The forest stages
In an exciting twist to proceedings, this year will see the return of the night stage - in fact there will be two - which will run in complete darkness through the forests. This is a thrilling addition to the rally and offers an unrivalled treat for fans who can witness the spectacle of WRC headlights piercing the Welsh darkness.
The Wales Rally GB route will take drivers across three competitive days of rallying through world-class stages. On the Friday, competitors will visit Port Talbot, Resolfen and the steep challenges of Rheola, while Saturday’s stages are based on the Epynt military ranges, before the rally returns to Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. The final day, Sunday 2 December, is the sting in the tail of the event, as drivers face the climbs, descents and hairpins of Brechfa and Trawscoed, before returning to Cardiff for their crowning moment.
Britain’s most exciting and innovative motorsport event is a date which should be in the calendar of every rally fan – make sure it’s in yours!
