CARDIFF FOOD BUSINESSES REWARDED FOR HIGH STANDARDS
Cardiff Council’s Public Protection Team in partnership with the Food Standards Agency Wales (FSAW) presented Food Hygiene and Healthy Options Awards to food businesses at a ceremony in City Hall.
Linked closely to the Food Hygiene and Healthy Options Awards, the event also marked the success of those who have recently completed the Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety in Catering course.
The awards were presented by Sean Hannaby, Chief Strategic Planning and Environment Officer and Rob Wilkins, Head of General Enforcement at FSAW. Each business was presented with a certificate to display on their premises. This will demonstrate to customers a good standard of food hygiene and enhances business reputation.
The ceremony included premises who have received a Gold or Silver Food Hygiene Award between May 1st and October 31st 2009, food businesses that have achieved a bronze, silver or gold healthy options award since June 2009, and individuals who have completed the Level 3 awards in Supervising Food Safety in Catering since July 2009.
Councillor Bridges, Chair of Cardiff’s Public Protection Committee said: “Cardiff Council is always eager to promote the very highest hygiene standards in food premises and we are keen to promote healthy options for those choosing to eat out. To win these accolades, premises must pass a rigorous inspection and demonstrate their commitment to high standards. Congratulations to all the winners.”
Rob Wilkins, Head of General Enforcement at FSAW said: “Eating out is increasingly part of our everyday life. It is therefore essential that food businesses attain high standards in cleanliness and hygiene practices. Caterers can also make a significant contribution to improving diet in Wales. I am delighted that so many businesses are participating in these award schemes which act as a source of public information and allow businesses to gain recognition for their achievements.”
Food Hygiene Awards
The Welsh Food Hygiene awards Scheme aims to give recognition to food premises that have attained a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene practices. The businesses must also have a food safety management system in place and all food handlers must be appropriately trained in food hygiene matters.
The scheme has three levels of award – Gold Silver and Bronze. The awards are given at the discretion of Council Food Safety Officers following an unannounced inspection where the required standards have been achieved and maintained.
Healthy Options Award
The All Wales Healthy Options Award is offered in Cardiff by Cardiff County Council to food businesses. The award is a way of rewarding businesses that practice good standards of food hygiene and offer healthy food options.
The award aims to make the food served by businesses generally healthier across the board to improve access to healthier food so the healthy choice is the easy choice.
Level 3 awards in Supervising Food Safety in Catering
The Level 3 course is designed for supervisors and managers within the catering industry to make them aware of their role in the implementation of food safety procedures at all stages of food preparation and service. The course also provides catering managers with a broader knowledge of food safety and assists them with their supervisory responsibilities.
The course is accredited by the Royal Society of Public Health. It is a highly regarded qualification and is firmly based on the Level Three National Occupational Standards developed by People 1st and the Sector Skills Council for the hospitality industry.
