New Ground Secured for Lisvane Cricket Club

After years of searching, Lisvane Cricket Club finally has its own ground having secured a 25-year lease of the old YMCA sports ground, a few miles down the lanes in St Mellons. The ground has not been used for about five years and there is great deal of work required on the playing field, the square, the Club House and the changing facilities.

It is hoped that the new ground will host all youth (from Under-9s to Under 17s) training sessions in the summer of 2008. If things go to plan, it might even be possible to hold a small number of friendly matches towards the end of the summer. The new ground will provide the only club-based cricket venue in the north east of Cardiff.

ECB/NatWest CricketForce comes to Lisvane CC – 4/5/6 April 2008

Recognising the enormous potential presented by the new facilities, the ECB has recognised Lisvane CC as a showcase club for their 2008 NatWest CricketForce event. This is fantastic news – it is the first time a club in Wales has been selected and it gives club activities a whole new impetus.

The main focus of the ECB/NatWest CricketForce support is the weekend of 4/5/6 April when the Club will host a wonderful jamboree to accompany work on the facilities. The presence of the NatWest cricket road show and professional cricketers on Saturday 5 April is planned to draw in the crowds and provide the best possible launch to the new facilities. Local dignatories, celebrities, TV and the press will be invited to help gain maximum exposure for the Club. It will be hard work but Lisvane CC and their helpers intend to have a lot of fun as well.

NatWest/ECB CricketForce provides a structure, with ECB support, to approach local businesses to assist via sponsorship of money or materials, for the Club membership to work together to upgrade the facilities. To help maximise the benefits, Lisvane CC will be reaching out to as many people and organizations as possible to get involved. As well as seeking sponsorship, folk will be asked to donate a few hours of their valuable time to help out across the wide range of tasks planned for the weekend.

If you are free, come and take a look at the wonderful location for yourself and get a bite to eat at the Sunday Brunch, 12noon-2pm on Sunday 2 March. The ground is off Pascal Close, which runs off Cypress Drive, St Mellons at the Heronmarsh pub.

Then, if you can, make some time available on Friday 4, Saturday 5 or Sunday 6 April 2008 at the ground to pitch in with a host of other volunteers, including England players and local dignatories at the ECB/NatWest Cricketforce event.

What you could do during or before ECB/NatWest CricketForce

In no particular order … catering, tiling, cleaning, demolition, coach cricket, lay a patio, paint interior or exterior walls, car park attendant, public relations and press liaison, plastering, carpeting, hang curtains, sand walls down, admin, contact potential suppliers, install white goods, signage, roofing, electrical work, video and photography.

Apart from your labour, what do we need?

In no particular order … roofing materials, interior and exterior paint, a display cabinet or two, shower wall tiles, shower flooring, sight screens, wicket covers and tarpaulins, boundary benches, kitchen white goods, timber, carpet, curtains, sponsorship, windows, sandpaper, power tools, patio and paving slabs, Clubhouse furniture, kitchenware, crockery, patio furniture, storage containers, gazebos, notice boards, signage, mirrors, local celebrities, rubbish bags, boundary ropes, cricket netting, weed killer, grass seed, cricket pitch roller, gang mower, tractor, loads of skips, food and drink to supply the troops…

…and lots, lots more! If you think it’ll come in handy, you’re probably right!

This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make a real difference to the cricketing history of north and east Cardiff and to the future prospects of your local cricket club. Please contribute in any way you can.

If you think you can help in any way (volunteering on the weekend, specialist skills, materials), please join the growing list of project partners, sponsors and volunteers by emailing us at: lwcc_committee@yahoo.co.uk or call Clive Brown on 029 2075 9709.

Winter Cricket

Places are filling up on the Club’s popular youth indoor winter cricket coaching sessions which continue from January right up to the new season on Friday evenings at UWIC, Cyncoed (the lower hall, below the car park area) and at St David’s College. If you are interested, please contact Ian Morgan (029 2076 3728) to check availability.

Adult nets will be on Wednesdays from January to April commencing on 16 January 2008, 8pm – 9.30pm at UWIC and are a great way to lose those extra festive inches! Prospective players of all standards are invited to contact Clive Brown in advance or to turn up on the day.

Cricket Club Launches Women’s Section in 2008

Looking for a new challenge in 2008?

Lisvane Cricket Club is on the look-out for enthusiastic ladies who fancy a game or two of cricket next season. With comprehensive adult and youth sections already in place, the Club is keen to promote ladies cricket and would like to form a team starting in 2008, which will encourage girls and women of any age, into the game of cricket.
