Breastfeeding in Wales: The facts

Latest figures reveal that initial breastfeeding rates in Wales are 67% compared to 70% in Scotland and 78% in England.

The highest incidences of breastfeeding are found among mothers from managerial and professional occupations, those with the highest education levels, those aged 30 or over and first time mothers.

55% of mothers from routine and manual socio-economic backgrounds breastfeed compared to 84% from managerial and professional backgrounds

The younger the mother the less likely she is to breastfeed. Only 42% of mothers aged 20 or under breastfeed their babies compared to 76% of mothers aged 30 or over.

Breastfeeding in Wales: The benefits
Breast milk is the only food naturally designed for babies. It contains all the nutrients in the right amounts for the first 6 months of life. It even changes as the baby grows.

Infant formula fed babies are more likely to suffer from sickness and diarrhoea, chest or ear infections, diabetes and allergies. Breastfed babies are at less risk of heart disease in later life as well.

Research suggests that breastfed babies also have better mental development.

Breastfeeding is also good for mothers. It helps them to lose the weight they gained during pregnancy as well as providing protection from breast and ovarian cancer, and developing stronger bones in later life.

Baby formula costs on average £500 a year whereas breast milk is free and ready instantly.

Breastfeeding is easier and more practical in the middle of the night.

When breastfeeding, mums don’t need to eat anything special, just maintain a healthy diet, including plenty of fluids.
