ABLE RADIO - entertainment for people with disability...

Able Radio is a station presenting information and entertainment for people with a disability or life limiting medical condition. Our programmes of course are also of interest to everybody and within the schedule we hope you will find different topics that are of interest to you.

However, our focus is on disability and with all presentation by people who themselves are disabled we bring real life experience to the radio. This is also your radio station – opportunities exist to get involved via the forum or even by presenting on-air.

Able Radio is based in South Wales although programming is focused on a larger region than just South Wales, attempting to include the rest of Wales. Above and beyond this we are offering an output that is of interest and relevant to the U.K. and can be potentially heard everywhere!

We are a not for profit social enterprise set up after many trials. Able Radio, has no link to any single charity or organisation, but brings together a multitude of separate groups under a new entity, and works in partnership with many organisations. Its vision and ethos echo all groups within society, advocating inclusion, equality and partnership. Able Radio is unique in the UK and further afield, being the first live service for people with a disability.

Able Radio – a voice for all

When will Able Radio go full time?

Able Radio will commence a full schedule once all the technical issues and content has been fully developed. We still need to attract significant funding to support this project. By joining the forum you can keep in contact with us and watch developments for yourself.

Why a radio station for people with disability?

Although we are led to believe that today everything is equal, most people with a disability know firsthand that there are limitations and problems. As a community we hope that we can come up with new ways of breaking down these barriers and demonstrate to the world that we are more than equal to everybody else!

So all the presenters have a good moan?

In our studio we have a sign – Leave your disability at the door. Our presenters have been selected for their personality and sense of judgement, not by their disability. We hope that we offer a balanced view on all subjects and yet have the experience of encountering many of the issues discussed first hand.

 I’m not disabled!

Good....... and if you enjoy our programmes fantastic! Our audience is made up of listeners who have a disability or a life limiting medical condition, which is more than 10 million people. But listeners are also carers, supporters, family, friends – we welcome everybody.

 Are you the first?

We have the accolade of being the first live station in the UK for people with disability. Indeed we are told that we are also big across the world and not aware of any other stations. The unique nature of this station is the fact that most output is live and so we can react to news and events immediately. There are many other services offering podcasts and similar services.

I can’t find you on my radio

Able Radio is available as an on-line digital service rather than via traditional radio transmission. Whilst this is a relatively new method of broadcast, new portable internet radio receivers are sold by high street retailers.

 I have other questions.....

Why not post them in the forum? You can address specific points to individual presenters, management and others involved in Able Radio.
